چکیده

A taxonomy of port-whole or meronymic relations is developed to explain the ordinary English-speaker’s use of the term “part of” and its cognates. The resulting clossificotion yields six types of meronymic relotions: 1. component-integral object (pedal-bike). 2. member-collection (ship-fleet), 3. portion-mass (slice-pie), 4. stuff-object (steel-car). 5. feature-activity (poying-shopping), and 6. place-oreo (Everglades-Florida). Meronymic relations ore further distinguished from other inclusion relations. such OS spatial inclusion, and class inclusion, and from several other semantic relotions: attribution, attachment. and ownership. This taxonomy is then used to explain cases of opporent intransitivity in merologicol syllogisms, and standard form syllogisms whose premises express different inclusion relations. The doto suggest thot intransitivities arise due to equivocations between different types of semantic relations. These results are then explained by meons of the relation element theory which accounts for the character and behavior of semantic relations in terms of more primitive relotionol elements. The inferential phenomena observed ore then explained by means of a single principle of element matching.

Representing and reasoning over a taxonomy of part-whole relations

Many types of part-whole relations have been proposed in the literature to aid the conceptual modeller to choose the most appropriate type, but many of those relations lack a formal specification to give clear and unambiguous semantics to them. To remedy this, a formal taxonomy of types of mereological and meronymic part-whole relations is presented that distinguishes between transitive and int...

Representing Part-Whole Relations

Part-whole relations appear throughout human knowledge. Their ubiq-uity suggests that they play an important role in intelligence. We conjecture that the cognitive value of partonomic knowledge lies in its ability to support translation between representations at diierent levels of granu-larity. This permits more eeective problem solving by allowing reasoners to integrate the unique beneets tha...

Extracting Lexical Relations from Biomedical Text: Learning Parts and Wholes MPhil / PhD Upgrade Report

Lexical relations organise and structure vocabulary. They reflect relations in the real world. Meronymy is the lexical relation between a word representing a part, and a word representing a whole, such as (finger partOf hand). Meronymy is of special importance in biomedicine: structure and process are organised along partitive axes. Anatomy, for example, is rich in part-whole relations. This im...

Part-Whole Relations in Object-Role Models

Representing parthood relations in ORM has received little attention, despite its added-value of the semantics at the conceptual level. We introduce a high-level taxonomy of types of meronymic and mereological relations, use it to construct a decision procedure to determine which type of part-whole role is applicable, and incrementally add mandatory and uniqueness constraints. This enables the ...

Utilizing Temporal Information for Taxonomy Construction

Taxonomies play an important role in many applications by organizing domain knowledge into a hierarchy of ‘is-a’ relations between terms. Previous work on automatic construction of taxonomies from text documents either ignored temporal information or used fixed time periods to discretize the time series of documents. In this paper, we propose a time-aware method to automatically construct and e...
